LIGHTING GUIDELINES

When to use these guidelines and application: use to submit any additions or changes to exterior lighting, including landscape lighting fixtures. If landscape lighting is included on a landscape plan that is being submitted, it is not necessary to submit this form separately, but be certain to detail the lighting on the landscape plan. Solar lights may be permitted as landscape lighting.

Lighting Application

GUIDELINES FOR NEW OR REPLACEMENT EXTERIOR LIGHTING INSTALLATION

Lighting and/or light fixtures are part of an overall design plan and shall be appropriate to the architectural style of the home. Even when unlit, lighting fixtures impact a residence with size and form. At night, lighting can create an inviting atmosphere through the level of intensity and strategic placement of the fixtures.

Appropriate examples:

• Light fixtures that are designed to respect, enhance and contribute to the architectural style, detailing and elements of a home;
• Wall mounted lighting for entryways positioned so that neighboring property owners remain undisturbed;
• Wattage which is limited so that illumination does not wash onto neighboring properties, as noted in the City of Dublin lighting code;
• Light fixtures that reinforce the overall composition of the home’s exterior with regard to color, material, size, scale and shape.

Inappropriate examples:

• Lighting which illuminates adjacent properties;
• Light fixtures that do not relate to the structure/site with regard to materials, color, size, scale and style, and;
• Open bulb posts, lanterns or spotlights with direct glare.

Whether you are planning to install new exterior lights, replace older styles or add to the existing, written approval from the Muirfield Design Control Committee must be obtained prior to installation. The following will help prepare the application. These guidelines are in accordance with the Muirfield Design Standards.

Prior to starting your project, the following are required for compliance:

1. Submit 2 complete applications including applicable drawings and brochures.
2. Provide elevations of the home, identifying the locations of the new lighting.
3. Provide a brochure describing the project.
4. Indicate the type of lighting and detail the size, color, wattage and coverage area.
5. Provide photos of the area where the post lamp or other exterior lighting will be installed.
6. Provide detail of any directional lighting proposed.
7. Explain the reason for the change.
8. Provide design review fee of $20.00.

What to Include with this Application

To avoid delays and to prevent the application from being tabled, please ensure the application is filled out completely and include two copies of the application and two each of all relevant materials (samples, photos, drawings, site maps, brochures, etc.) plus the design review fee. One copy will be returned to the submitter. Include the following:

• Elevation sheets identifying locations where lighting will be installed
• Lighting fixture description including color and style
• Brochures or samples
• Photos of the area where the lighting will be located
• Written explanation for the change
• Design Review fee payment of $20.00
• Expected Date of Completion
